Hardrock & Ophia

My Bio

Without the wisdom of my grandmother, Ophia Cox, I simply wouldn't exist. On the way from Oklahoma to California during the Dust Bowl, she insisted that my dad attend school—no matter how short the layover—as Hardrock worked the fields to earn money so the family could make it to the next stop. Without an education, Sid Cox wouldn't have impressed my mom, Norma, enough to marry her. But when she was only days old, Carl and Tennessee Foster adopted her, so they get a lot of credit, too. I never told any of them how grateful I am, so now I'm telling you.

I worked as a freelance television producer for various national media outlets. When bad things happened—plane crashes, wildfires, misbehavior by celebrities—my phone rang and I headed off to join the scrum.

I was a contributing writer at San Diego Magazine. My two-part series on the David Westerfield case won a Silver Award for reporting from the City and Regional Magazine Association. I worked as a consultant for 48 Hours during Kristin Rossum's trial and also got the attention of Globe, Star and National Enquirer. I loved working with those guys, listening to their British or Australian accents.

At KFMB-TV, News 8 in San Diego, I uncovered improper disposal of confidential financial information, leading to a new state law protecting consumers. I also exposed a multi-million-dollar case of dental fraud and referred the results of my investigation to the state Attorney General’s Office, resulting in felony convictions against nine defendants. I also did a little radio reporting while at News 8.

My television career began in Fresno at KFSN-TV, ABC30, where I worked as a morning show co-anchor.

I started in journalism at The Fresno Bee as a general assignment reporter. I also became a guest columnist.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Stanford University and a Master of Arts in Literature and Writing Studies from California State University San Marcos.
